Asking for forgiveness when you have made a mistake is the first step in making things better. We often forget to say that we are sorry, but we must remember that it is never too late. However, asking for absolution is not just about other people… If we want others to forgive us, first we must forgive ourselves. The next parable is for all those people who find it hard to accept their actions and live with them, no matter how wrong.
A story of the burden we all carry in our souls … and of which only we can get rid of…
Once there was a man who was just like every other man on earth. Years had passed, and his time to leave this world came. He realized he had died, looked around, and got very surprised. His body lay on the bed, with only one soul left. Shallow and transparent, everything could be seen through it. The person got upset – without a body, he felt somehow unpleasant and uncomfortable.
All his thoughts were floating in his soul like colorful fish. All his memories lay at the bottom of his soul – pick up and examine. Among those memories were beautiful ones. Memories that you are pleased to look at. But there were also such that would make a person feel scared and disgusted. He tried to throw away the bad memories from his soul, but it didn’t work. Then he tried to put nicer memories on top. And he went down his path.
God only looked at the man and said nothing. The man decided that God was in such a hurry that he did not notice his other memories. He rejoiced and went to Heaven since God hadn’t closed the doors before him.
Time had passed. No one could say how much exactly, because, in the place where the man was, time didn’t pass the way it did on Earth. Then, the man went back to God.
“Why did you come back?” God asked him. “I left the doors to Heaven open for you.”
“Dear God, I don’t feel well in your Heaven.” said the man. “I’m afraid to even take a step – the good in my soul is not much, and I cannot hide the stupid things I have done in my life. I am afraid that everyone can see I am a terrible person. “
“What do you want?” God asked because He is the creator of time and has enough of it to answer everyone’s questions.
“You are mighty and merciful,” the man said. “You saw my soul, but you didn’t stop me from trying to hide my sins. Please, have mercy, take away all the bad from my soul.
“I was expecting a completely different request,” God replied. “But I’ll do what you want.”
God took away everything the man was ashamed of. He removed from his memory the treacheries and betrayals, the cowardice and meanness, the lies, the slanders, the greed, and the laziness. But forgetting about hatred, the man also forgot about love. Forgetting about his downfalls, he also forgot about his achievements. The soul stood empty before God- much more empty than the moment the man was born.
God, however, had mercy and returned everything in the man’s soul. Then the man asked once again:
“What should I do, God? If the good and the bad in me have such a connection, where am I supposed to go? In hell?”
“Go back to Heaven.” The Creator answered,” I have never created anything else but Heaven. Hell is something you carry in yourself all the time.”
The man came back to Heaven, but time passed, and he went to speak to God again.
“Dear God,” said the man, “ I don’t feel well in your Heaven. You are mighty and merciful. Please, have mercy and forgive my sins.”
“I was expecting a completely different request,” God replied. “But I will do as you wish.”
And God forgave everything the man had done. And the man returned to Heaven. But time passed, and he returned to God once more.
“What do you want now?” God asked.
“God!” said the man. “ I do not feel well in Heaven. You are mighty and merciful, and you forgave me. But I can’t forgive myself. Help me!”
“I was expecting such a request,” God answered. “But this is the stone I can’t move …”
